A Chartered Accountant is one who has passed the necessary examination conducted by the body of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of that country. Under the stipulated rules of the body he or she is also required to practice under a licensed professional firm of Chartered Accountants for a specific period of time. During the period of apprenticeship the person is entitled to a fixed stipend which is generally increased every year. The tests are carried out in two important stages. The first stage is known as the intermediate stage and the next as final stage. Students going through the course have the option of completing the first stage in one sitting or take up the exams in parts. The same is also applicable for the final stage. For this reason the students of the course having to work as an apprentice as well as those with full time jobs can sit for the exams as it is not mandatory on them to stay in a hostel and study full time. Once, the student passes the exams and successfully completes his apprenticeship, he is then enrolled as a member of the Chartered Accountants of that country.
Chartered Accountants can work as an employee in a concern or can carry out their own consultancy in the form of individual or as partner of an audit firm. For this, they have to obtain a ‘practicing certificate’ by meeting further requirements like having adequate insurance and undergoing regular inspections.
